Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
